Given:
 
Vapour density = 32
 
We know,
 
Molecular mass = 2 × Vapour density
 
                       = 2 × 32
 
                       = 64
In oxide if there are 2 atoms of oxygen then,
 
2×16 = 32
 
so 64-32 = 32
 
which is sulphur. Therefore the gaseous oxide is SO2.
 
The equivalent weight of sulphur =
 
space equals space fraction numerator Molecular space weight over denominator straight n minus space factor end fraction

space equals space 16 over 2

space equals space 8
 
Hence the equivalent weight of an element is 8.
