Genetic engineering and biotechnology is used greatly in improving livestock and animal products. Procedures such as artificial insemination and embryo transfer have been used in the genetic manipulation of livestock. By applying genetic engineering, scientists hope to produce animals with altered traits such as disease resistance, wool growth, body growth and milk composition.
Genetic engineering has the potential to improve the quality of milk produced by animals. Several scientists are trying to produce transgenic animals which can secrete high-value pharmaceutical proteins from milk.
GE can also be used to produce desired qualities in animal breeds. Also meat of animals can be enriched with desired nutrients.
