Self-Study Vs. Traditional Education: Which Route Should School Students Take To Attain Study Goals?

Education is no more limited to the confines of a classroom. Of course, educational institutions continue to function effectively: they play a crucial role in handing out education to the masses. But, learning is no more confined to the four walls of schools, colleges, and coaching centers.

Why so? Because of the rising trend of self-study.

Before we take a look at the benefits of self-study, let us take a quick look at the hurdles of traditional education.

The Perils of Traditional Education

Traditional education quickly scales from being extensive to hectic. School students often find themselves trapped in this vicious cycle where they run from school to coaching classes and back to school again the next day.

In the process, traditional education may serve the purpose of systematically educating and assessing students in different academic disciplines but it does not provide for all-round development of the learner.

It makes too many demands on the learner’s time and gives back too little in return. To enhance chances of employment in the future, or to even seek admission in top colleges and universities, students must focus on accumulating a diverse skill-set.

Also, traditional education in India is expensive and has limited accessibility. Not everyone can benefit from it.

The Benefits of Self- Study

Self-study gives the learner, a sense of freedom. Here, the learner is free to choose what they want to learn, when they want to learn it, and from where they want to initiate the learning process (for example, the comfort of his home). It puts the student in charge! And, this is where learning becomes fun (read it as more productive).

Self-study does not make education feel like donkey-work. Instead, it ignites the learner’s curiosity. The major difference between doing self-study and going for traditional education is: Self-study encourages students to accumulate knowledge on study topics rather than rushing them through the chapters to finish the syllabus.

In the process of self-studying students can spare as much time as they want discovering their strengths and mastering their weaknesses. And, since they do it out of their own interest, it keeps them self-motivated, boosts their happiness quotient and takes away the feelings of anger and frustration.

Self-study saves the learner a lot of time. Since self-study can be done from anywhere, anytime; the learner is free to pursue other interests; thereby, moving towards a healthy, all-round development.

Distance Learning: The Falling Bridge between Traditional Education and Self Study

There are broadly two types of learners: One who spend long hours at schools every day, switching their focus from History to Geography to Physics to Maths as per the time table. Then, there are those, who sign up for distance learning, receive their course material and show up in the institute only to appear for the end of term exams.

Does distance learning, then, hold the key to your freedom as a student? Isn’t it the perfect bridge between traditional education and self-studying?

We would like to say an emphatic ‘YES’, but there are other concerns.

It may interest you to know that out of 30 million higher education students in India, only some 5 million students opt for distance learning. Why?

Because, in distance education, students barely learn anything. They hardly have any practical training, and the complete lack of supervision means that: these students lack proper skills to apply their knowledge to answer questions in exams or crack job interviews later on.

Hence, this so-called bridge between traditional education and self- study is fast falling! The solution? Online Education.

Blended Learning: The Perfect Merger between Routine Learning and Self-Studying

Traditional education is too strict on the learner, while distance learning is way too lenient. So, why not blend the two? That way, we can retain the best of both worlds. And, effectively deal with the shortcomings of each of them.

And, just how can we go about doing it? By leveraging the digital technology, of course!

Now, consider this scenario when a student goes to school as usual. He is updated with the learning standards of his time, and does not run the risk of sub-standard education. But, he does not go to tuition classes for another 5 hours after school. Instead, he goes for online coaching classes.

He attends these online classes from the comfort of his home. Here, he just has to log in and start studying.  He can choose the topics he wants to learn, watch videos about them to add the audio-visual touch to his learning process, appear for online tests to check his preparation, clear his doubts online with the help of subject matter experts, and go back to school the next day with all his homework done.

Isn’t that smart? Can you imagine how much time, money and energy that will save you? But, just where can you find the right online coaching class to cater to all your learning needs?
