India’s Participation in PISA 2021

PISA-D helps to build the capacity of participating countries to conduct large-scale learning assessments, and analyse and use the results to support national policies and evidence-based decision making.

On 19^th February 2019, the Union Cabinet approved the agreement for participation in the Programme for International Students Assessment (PISA) conducted by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). This agreement between India and OECD was signed on 28th January 2019.

What is PISA?

The Programme for International Students Assessment (PISA) is a worldwide programme which tests 15-year-old students in reading, mathematics, and science. It is conducted by OECD every three years. Unlike content-based assessment, PISA is a competency-based assessment which measures key competencies acquired by students for essential participation in modern society. It gauges students and thus helps a government shape education policies in the country. Participation in PISA will help deviate from standard rote learning and introduce education reforms which are based on students' competencies.

Over 80 countries, including 44 middle-income countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, Brazil, Indonesia, and Vietnam, have participated in PISA.

According to sources, the pillars of our education system, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT), will be part of the process and activities related to the actual test. Schools run by Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) and other schools in Chandigarh will participate in PISA.

So, Indian students can now test their competencies with peers from around the globe in the next assessmentPISA 2021.
