ICSE Class 10 Answered

Why is speed of light more than speed of sound?
Asked by swarnavomail | 01 Oct, 2021, 07:46: PM
answered-by-expert Expert Answer
Light is electromagnetic wave . Electromagnetic wave does not require a medium for propagation.

Electromagnetic wave is produced due to oscillation of electric field and magnetic field .
This oscillation frequency is very high . In visible range of electromagnetic wave oscillation frequency is 1014 Hz

since speed of wave is proportional to frequency , speed of electromagnetic wave or speed of light
is very high , i.e. 3 × 108 m/s in vacuum or air

Whereas sound waves are mechanical waves . Sound waves are produced due to mechanical vibrations and
propagated into a medium by generating pressure variation in medium. These preessure variation generates
air particle vibration in longitudinal direction , i.e., in same direction of propagation.

Our ear or microphone senses this air particle vibration to detect the sound. It is not possible to create vibration of
very high frequency in amedium like electromagnetic wave. hence speed of sound is not high as compare to speed of light.
