It is a device used to convert chemical energy into electrical energy.
Consider the following example of piece of zinc (Zn) metal placed in a solution of copper sulfate (CuSO4), where Zn is oxidized to Zn+2 and Cu+2 is reduced to Cu.
Redox equation:
Zn(s) + Cu+2(aq) → Zn+2(aq) + Cu(s)
Anode reaction (Zn electrode): Zn → Zn+2 (aq) + 2e-
Cathode reaction (Cu electrode): Cu+2(aq) + 2e- → Cu(s)
