What is magnetic compass? How can we apply the concept of direction of magnet to judge the directions?

A device used to find the direction while navigation by means of magnetic needle which points to north is called magnetic compass.
Magnetic needle when comes to rest always points in north south direction. This happens because the magnetic north pole is attracted by the earth's magnetic south pole and magnetic south pole is attracted by the earth's magnetic north pole.
