1) emf is the voltage developed by a source of electrical energy like a battery or a cell.
2) It is this voltage that drives the current through the circuit.
3) The name emf is the abbreviation of "electromotive force". Here, force is not the mechanical force but it is the potential or energy that the cell provides to drive the current.
