Distance is the length of the actual path while displacement is the shortest distance between the initial and final positions.
Displacement of an object is a vector quantity. It is the change in the position of an object. In straight line motion, particular distance travelled by an object is unique and also it will be equal to the least distance between the change of position of the object. In a curved or circular motion, the path length travelled between two given positions and the least distance between the two position will differ.
But in straight line motion, the path length travelled between two given positions and the least distance between the two positions will be the same.
Hence, in a straight line motion, distance is equal to displacement.
