CBSE Class 10 Answered

Question: A ray of light travelling in air falls on the surface of a transparent glass slab at an angle of 60° with the normal to the surface. Find the angle made by the refracted ray with the normal within the glass slab. Refractive index of the glass slab is square root of 2  .

Refractive index of glass , μ = sin(i) / sin(r)

where i is angle of incidence and r is angle of refraction as shown in figure.

sin(r) = sin(i) / μ = sin(60) / √2  = 0.6124

Angle of refraction r = sin-1 ( 0.6124 ) = 37.8o
