Question: A ray of light travelling in air falls on the surface of a transparent glass slab at an angle of 60° with the normal to the surface. Find the angle made by the refracted ray with the normal within the glass slab. Refractive index of the glass slab is   .

Refractive index of glass , μ = sin(i) / sin(r)

where i is angle of incidence and r is angle of refraction as shown in figure.

sin(r) = sin(i) / μ = sin(60) / √2  = 0.6124

Angle of refraction r = sin-1 ( 0.6124 ) = 37.8o
