The earth's magnetic field is from south to north. To neutralise the earth's magnetic field, the field generated by the current carrying conductor must be equal and opposite to that of the earths magnetic field. now the current is going vertically downwards in the wire, so the direction of magnetic field as seen from the top of the wire is in anticlockwise direction.
