Question: The average weight of 10 students is 45 kg. Four students of average weight 40 kg are replaced with three students whose weights are 45 kg, 43 kg and 38 kg respectively. Find the approximate value of the average weight after the replacement (in kgs).
Solution:
Average weight of 10 students is 45 kg.
Sum of weights of these 10 students = 45 x 10 = 450 kg
Sum of weights of four students of average weight 40 kg is 4 x 40 = 160 kg
Sum of weights of three students whose weights are 45 kg, 43 kg and 38 kg is 45 + 43 + 38 = 126 kg
New sum = Total sum + Sum weights of 4 students with average weight 40 kg - Sum of weights of three students
= 450 + 160 - 126
= 416 kg
Number of remaining students = 9
New average weight = 416/9 = 46.22 = 46 kg (approximately)
Hence, the approximate value of the average weight after the replacement is 46 kg.
