Question: In a class, the average weight of the girls is 35 kg and the average weight of the boys is 42 kg. If the ratio of boys to girls is 4 : 3, then find the average weight of the students in the class (in kg).
Solution: The ratio of boys to girls is 4 : 3
Let the number of boys be 4a and no. of girls be 3a.
As per the question,
Sum of weights of girls = 35 x 3a
Sum of weights of boys = 42 x 4a
Sum of weights of all the students = Sum of weights of girls + sum of weights of boys
= 35 x 3a + 42 x 4a
= 105a + 168a
= 273a
Average weight of the students = Total sum/No. of students
= 273a/(4a+3a)
= 273a/7a
= 39
Hence, the averag weight of the students is 39 kg.
