Question: The average of n observations is 40. If one more observation of value 80 is added, then the average is increased by 1. Find the value of n.
Solution:
Average of n observations is 40.
Therefore, sum of n observations = 40n
Adding one more observation of value 80.
New sum = 40n + 80 ... (i)
New average is increased by 1.
New average = 40+1 = 41
New sum = New average x no. of observations
40n + 80 = 41 x (n+1)
40n + 80 = 41n + 41
41n - 40n = 80 - 41
n = 39
