Let us assume a single turn coil of radius r is placed coaxially with another coil of radius R  as shown in figure.

Let R > > r .

Let I1 is the current passing through the outer coil of radius R .

Change in current from 0 to I1 in outer coil induces current I2 in the inner coil .

Mutual inductance M of this setup is defined as

φ2 = M I1..............................(1)

where φ2 is the flux of magnetic field passing through the area of inner coil .

since R > > r , let us consider flux of magnetic field due to current I1 is uniform over inner coil area

If B is magnetic field induction in the area of inner coil due to current I1 in outer coil, then

φ2 = B × begin mathsize 14px style straight pi end style r22 = begin mathsize 14px style fraction numerator mu subscript o I subscript 1 over denominator 2 space R end fraction end style × begin mathsize 14px style straight pi end style r2 .................................(2)
By comparing eqn.(1) and eqn.(2) , we get  begin mathsize 14px style M space equals space pi over 2 cross times space mu subscript o space cross times r squared over R end style
