when train starts from rest , moves with uniform acceleration a and attains maximum speed v , then we have

v2 = 2 a S1 ......................(1)

time taken t to attain maximum speed ,  t1 = v/a  ....................(2)

where S1 is distance travelled

After attaining maximum speed , moves with retardation a and comes to rest after travelling a distance S2 .

Then we have,  v2 = 2 a S2...............(3)

time taken t to come to rest ,  t2 = v/a  ...................(4)

Total distance travelled ,  S = S1 + S2 = ( v2 / 2a ) + ( v2 / 2a ) = ( v2 / a ) ................(5)

Total time travelled , t = t1 + t2 = (2v)/a    .................. (6)

using eqn.(5), we rewrite eqn.(6) as ,  begin mathsize 14px style t space equals space 2 space square root of S over a end root end style
maximum speed , begin mathsize 14px style v space equals space square root of a space S end root end style
