Moment of inertia of a rod about an axis perpendicular to its length and passing through the centre of mass is 2 g-cm2. Find the moment of inertia about an axis perpendicular to its length and passing through one end of the rod.

Moment of Inertia I of a rod of mass M about an axis passing through centre of mass and
perpendicular to its length L is given by,
 
I = M×(L2 / 12 ) = 2g-cm2 ..................(1)
 
Moment of Inertia I1 of a rod of mass M about an axis passing through one end of its length L and 
perpendicular to its length is given by,
 
I1 = M×(L2 / 12 ) + M×(L2 / 4 )  =  M×(L2 / 3 ) .................(2)
from eqns.(1) and (2), we get I1 = 8 g-cm2
