In the reaction of Alkali metals with water,the products formed are- 2 metal ions,2OH ions and 2 hydrogen atoms. Please explain me the formation of ions and cations?

Expert Answer:
Since 2 hydrogen atoms combine to form a hydrogen molecule therefore, 2 water molecules dissosciate to give 2 hydrogen ions and 2 hydroxide ions
so the net reaction becomes
2M(s) + 2H2O(l) ---> 2M+(aq) + 2OH-(aq) + H2(g)
2Na(s) + 2H2O(l)---> 2NaOH(aq) + H2(g)
