Test for sulphate ion present in a given salt:
 
Add barium chloride solution. If white precipitate is formed, presence of SO42- ion is confirmed. The product formed is soluble in concentrated HCl.
 
SO42- + BaCl2(aq) → BaSO4(s) + 2Cl-(aq)
                            white ppt.
