Gastric vacuole is nothing but food vacuole. But the term gastric vacuole, instead of food vacuole, is used mainly in case of protozoans.
A gastric vacuole is formed in the following manner:
The food material is incorporated into a vacuole after being ingested. The pH of these gastric vacuoles becomes acidic due to the secretions of surrounding protoplasm. These acidic secretions aids in the digestion of food. After the food is digested, the pH in these vacuole becomes neutral or alkaline.
