CBSE Class 11-science Answered
Half the length of a stick is wooden & half steel. It is pivoted at the wooden end & a force is applied at the steel end at right angles to its length. Next, it is pivoted at the steel end & the same force is applied at the wooden end. In which case is angular acceleration more & why?

Expert Answer
When the stick is pivoted at the steel end (heavier material), it lies at a lesser distance from the axis of rotation. Therefore, the moment of inertia of the stick will be lesser in this case. Thus, angular acceleration will be more in the case where the wooden part (lighter material) is adjusted at larger distance from the axis of rotations.
