Question: Find the equation of the lines passing through the point (4, 0) and equally inclined to the coordinate axes.
Solution:
(i)
Since the line is equally inclined to the coordinate axes and it is in the first quadrant, angle of inclination is 45o
Slope of line is m = tan 45o = 1
Also, the line passes through the point (4, 0)
Therefore, equation of line will be
y - 0 = m(x - 4)
y = x - 4
x - y = 4
(ii)
Since the line is equally inclined to the coordinate axes and it is in the fourth quadrant, angle of inclination is -45o
Slope of line is m = tan(-45o) = -1
Also, the line passes through the point (4, 0)
Therefore, equation of line will be
y - 0 = m(x - 4)
y = -(x - 4)
x + y = 4
