CBSE Class 11-science Answered

A uniform beam of length L meters and weight M kg supports two unequal masses each of mass m1 and m2 respectively, balanced at the opposite ends of the seesaw. Calculate the normal force N exerted on the beam by the support, and develop the equations for net force and net torque for the system using equilibrium conditions for a rigid body.

Let Fnet and  be the net force and net torque on the system respectively.

The net force on the system is given by using first condition of equilibrium, that is Fnet = N − (m1g + m2g + Mg) = 0

Therefore the normal force N exerted on the beam by the support can be written as    N = m1g + m2g +Mg

The net torque on the system is given by using second condition of equilibrium, that is
