ICSE Class 9 Answered

A train is moving with a velocity of 90 km hl. It is brought to stop by applying the brakes which produce a retardation of 0-5 m s2. Find: (i) the velocity after 10 s, and the time taken by the train to come to rest. Plot on graph

answered-by-expert Expert Answer
Velocity of train = 90 km/hr = 90 × (5/18) = 25 m/s

Retardation a = 0.5 m/s2

Velocity after 10 s is determined from equation odf motion " v = u - ( a t ) "

where u is initial velocity , v is velocity at t seconds and a is retardation

v = 25 - ( 0.5 × 10 ) = 20 m/s

Velocity after 10 s = 20 m/s

-----------------------------------------

when train comes to rest , final velocity is zero.

Hence time taken t to come to rest is determined  as , t = u / a = 25/.5 = 50 s
