A particle moves 4m north then 5m east and finally 6m South. Calculate the displacement.

From diagram given above we can see that,
ED = CD - CE = 6 -3 = 3 m
AE = 4 m ...( from diagram)
Thus, displacment = shortest distance between the final and initial position = AD
By applying Pythagoras' Theorem,
AD2 = AE2 + ED2 = 42 + 32 = 16 + 9 = 25
AD2 = 25
Hence,
AD = 5 m
Thus, displacement of particle is 5 m
