CBSE Class 11-science Answered
A bomb is dropped from an aeroplane in level flight at a speed of 40m/s from a height of 490m above
the ground. How far ahead of the point of dropping does the bomb hit the ground.

time to travel vertical distance is obtained using, S = (1/2)g t2
where S is vertical distance , g is acceleration due to gravity and t is time to reach ground.
Hence , we get, t = ( 2S / g )1/2 = ( 2 × 490 / 9.8 )1/2 = 10 s
Horizontal distance travelled by the bomb = 40 × 10 = 400 m
