Consider a metallic tube with a small opening towhich a balloon is tied.
The balloon will start bulging when the water is filled in the tube and it is due to the liquid which applies a lateral pressure on the sides of the tube.
The lateral pressure is exertedby the liquids and gases, but not by solids.
Thus, liquid exerts pressure on the sides of the container.
