why an alpha particle but not a proton is emitted by radioactive nuclei?

Expert Answer
A proton is also emitted in a radioactive decay. However, this happens only for nuclei which are proton rich and it is also followed by a beta decay.
So, a proton emitting from a nucleus is highly improbable.
An alpha particle is the favoured decay particle as it lends stability to the nuclei.
