For projectile motion, maximum range is obtained when an object is projected at angle 45°.

Maximum range is given by, begin mathsize 12px style R space equals space fraction numerator v subscript 0 superscript 2 over denominator g end fraction space........... left parenthesis 1 right parenthesis end style
( for eqn.(1), refer NCERT text book for XI, part-1, chapter 4, under the heading projectile motion)

where v0 is initial velocity of projectile and g is acceleration due to gravity. We are given that maximum range for a person is 100 m

hence begin mathsize 12px style fraction numerator v subscript 0 superscript 2 over denominator g end fraction space equals space 100 space space space space o r space space v subscript 0 superscript 2 space end superscript space equals space 100 cross times g space space space space space space........... left parenthesis 2 right parenthesis end style
if the same person is throwing stone vertically with same speed v0, then the maximum height h reached by the stone is given by
begin mathsize 12px style h space equals space fraction numerator v subscript 0 superscript 2 over denominator 2 g end fraction space equals space fraction numerator 100 g over denominator 2 g end fraction space equals space 50 space m end style................(3)
(begin mathsize 12px style v subscript 0 superscript 2 end style  is substituted from eqn.(2) in eqn(3) )
