Answer:

The RER is essential for protein synthesis whereas the SER carries out lipid synthesis. Both of these functions will not take place in absence of ER. In absence of proteins and lipids, the cells would not be able to function, since they are the basic components of any cell and are essential for all important activities of the cell. Hence the cells will not be able to survive.
