Speed is a scalar quantity .

Velocity is speed in specified direction , it is a vector , it has magnitude and direction.

If you walk towards North at the rate of 10 km/hour , by convention , velocity = +10 km/hr.
By same convention , if you walk towards at the rate of 10 km/hour , velocity = -10 km/hr.

But in both the case speed = 10 km/hr
