Magnification  = length of image / length of object

Magnification of image is given by numerical value like -2 , +1. Every magnification value contain two things
First its sign it can be either +be or - be.
+ve value shows that image and object both lie on the same side of line that's why it is also known as erect image. Like  the image formation by concave mirror when object is placed between focus and pole.
-ve value shows that image and object will lie in the opposite side of principal axis that's why it is also known as inverted news. Like image formation by concave mirror when the object is placed between centre of curvature  and focus.
The other part of the magnification is numerical value if it is greater than 1 then the image length  will be greater than object length.
If its value is less than 1 then the length of image will be less than object length.
