The turning effect of force acting on the body about an axis is due to the moment of force or torque.

Consider a body pivoted at a point. Force F is applied horizontally on the body. The force does not produce linear motion in the body as it is not free to move. However, the body turns.

Factors affecting the turning of a body:
 (i) The magnitude of the force applied, and
(ii) The distance of line of action of the force from the axis of rotation.

The turning depends on the product of both the above factors. This product is called the moment of force (or torque). Thus, we define moment of force as "The moment of a force (or torque) is equal to the product of the magnitude of the force and the perpendicular distance of the line of action of force from the axis of rotation.
