CBSE Class 12-science Answered

What is metallised finger contact? Why is it smaller in size? On page 489 NCERT Class XII , it says that the electrons are collected on n side and holes are collected on the p side which are collected by finger contact and back contact respectively. Does that mean it is in reversed biased condition? If so , please explain the reasoning for the reverse biased condition.

1) The metallised finger contact is a type of thin contact through which any external real wire contacts can be made. Similarly, the back contact is also used for the same purpose.

2) A solar cell has thin p and n wafers which cannot be directly used to make contacts with any wiring. So, these contacts are provided to the Solar cell.

3) Now, one thing that needs to be understood is that a Solar cell generates emf/voltage when the light is incident on it. So, there is no question of it being forward or reverse biased.

4) The electrons and holes so collected at each contact indicate that these can be used for current conduction through an external circuit. It also indicates that the emf or current generated by the Solar cell can be utilised through these metal contacts. It does not indicate that the cell is reverse biased.
