Expert Answer
When slinky is compressed work is done against the spring force, and this workdone is stroed as potential energy.
when it is left free it will come to equlibrium position may be after few oscillations.
When slinky is stretched, work is done against the internal elastic force again this work done is stroed as potential energy.
when it is left free after stretching, it will come to equilibrium due to the elastic force.
