CBSE Class 11-science Answered

This doubt of mine has already been answered. But I am still confused that why should 300N weight be placed at the extreme end of the rod and the reaction coming from one of the knife edges should be neglected. Please solve my doubt.

For equilibrium  net moment of the acting forces should be zero
( -ve sign should be considered for clockwise  moment while calculating net moment).

Reaction force at knife edges are not playing any role to maintain equilibrium
because if you take moment of reaction forces around centre of the rod,
moment due to reaction force at one kife edge cancel the moment due to reaction force at other knife edge.

Obviously weight of rod acting at centre of mass, or centre of rod.

As per the question you need to position the knife edges so that rod is at static equilibrium
if 30 kg weight can be placed anywhere on top of rod.

If you place the 30 kg weight between knife edges the rod is at static equilibrium.

But if you place 30 kg weight between one knife edge and end point of the rod ,
we need to workout the moment of 30 kg weight about supporting point of knife edge near to 30 kg weight
and moment of weight of rod about same supporting point of knife edge.

If moment of 30 kg weight exceeds moment of weight of rod, then the rod topples,

If moment of weight of rod exceeds moment of 30 kg weight the rod will not topple
because it produce more downward force  due to 30 kg and
excess reaction forces produced at supporting knife edges will balance.

If 30 kg weight is placed between extreme end and any one of knife edge,
moment of 30 kg weight is maximum when 30 kg is placed at extreme end.

Hence by placing 30 kg weight at extreme end,  maximum moment is estimated that is related to distance
between knife edge and extreme end.  This helps us to get the maximum distance between knife edges
