As a first sign of germination, the radicle grows down, piercing through the coleorhiza. It grows into the soil, forming the primary root of the seedling. This root however is short lived. Meanwhile the plumule starts its growth vertically upwards. It comes above the soil along with the coleoptile and becomes green.Soon the plumule shows vigorous growth and comes out piercing through the coleoptile. Then the first leaf of the seedling is formed.

The adventitious roots also arise at the base of the plumule.

Some people regard that the germination is partially epigeal since, the coloeoptile, which is an outgrowth of the cotyledon comes above the soil along with the plumule.
