CBSE Class 9 Answered
It means that sharing of electron means giving(or sharing)valence electrons of one atom to different atoms of same element,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, and gaining (or losing)electrons means giving valence electrons of one element to another one and only element?(Am I correct?)please explain.

Expert Answer
Sharing and gaining/losing electrons can be explained with the help of bonding concept as follows:
There are two types of bonds.
1) Covalent bond
2) Ionic bond
1) Covalent bond is formed by sharing of electrons between two atoms of same element or different elements.
Examples:
In H2 molecule, sharing of electrons takes place between two hydrogen atoms that means atoms of same elements.
In HCl molecule, sharing of electrons takes place between atoms of hydrogen and chlorine atoms that means of atoms of different elements.
2) Ionic bond is formed by donating electron or electrons by the atom of highly electropositive element to the atom of highly electronegative element.
Example:
In NaCl molecule, sodium atom (highly electropositive) donates electron to the atom of chlorine (highly electronegative).
