Acceleration  is defined as rate of change of velocity.

Let initial velocity be u and final veleocity be v. Let this change in velocity takes place in t seconds.

Hence acceleration a = (v-u)/ t   or   v = u + at ....................................(1)

Distance S travelled in t seconds is given by,     S = (average velocity) × time = (1/2) ( v+u ) × t .....................(2)

using eqn.(1), eqn.(2) can be written as S = (1/2) ( u+at+u) × t =  u×t + (1/2)a×t2  ............................(3)

Let us consider eqn.(2) :  S = (1/2) (v+u) × t

in the above equation, if we substitute for t using eqn.(1), we get,  S = (1/2) (v+u) (v-u)/a   or  v2 = u2 + 2aS
