CBSE Class 12-science Answered

Define the terms (i) drift velocity, (ii) relaxation time. A conductor of length L connected to a source of emf ε. If this conductor is replaced by another conductor of same material and same area of cross-section but of length 3L, how will the drift velocity change?

answered-by-expert Expert Answer

The average velocity of electrons, independent of time, although accelerated through a conductor is called drift velocity.

The average time interval between successive collisions is called relaxation time.

Drift velocity

Where V is the potential difference applied across the length of the conductor.

Keeping V constant, if Length L of the conductor is made 3 times, the drift velocity will become 1/3rd.
