Let the forces (a+b) and (a-b) represent two sides of parallelogram PQRS . Then resultant of two forces is diagonal PR
Angle β as shown in figure is calculated using the cosine rule
(a+b)2 + (a-b)2 + 2 (a+b) (a-b) cosβ = 3a2 + b2
After simplification, above equation becomes, 2 ( a2 - b2 ) cosβ = ( a2 - b2 ) or cosβ = (1/2) or β = 60° .
Hence angle α between two forces (a+b) and (a-b) is given as , α = 120°
