A boat goes downstream and covers the distance between two ports in 96 minutes while it covers the same distance upstream in 120 minutes . If the speed of the stream is 1 km/h ,find the speed of the boat in still water

Let S be the distance between the two ports.
 
Let u km/hr be the speed of boat in still water.
 
downstream time to travel = distance/time = S/(u+1) = 96   or   S = 96(u+1)  ........................(1)
 
upstream time to travel = S/(u-1) = 120   or  S = 120(u-1) ........................(2)
 
By equating (1) and (2),  96(u+1) = 120(u-1)  ..............(3)
 
From eqn.(3), we get u = 9 km/hr
