expanded volume of mercury = V×γ×ΔT = 256×1.8×10-4 × 80 = 3.686 cm3........................(1)
where V is volume before heating, γ is volume expansion coefficient and ΔT is increase in temperature.

expansion of glass = Vg×γg×ΔT = 256×3×4×10-6 ×80 = 0.246 cm3 ...........................(2)

subscript g stands for glass. we considered that  volume expansion coefficient is three times of linear expansion coefficient

overflowing volume of mercury = 3.686-0.246 = 3.42 cm3
