part(a)
we need to use the equation "S = u×t+(1/2)g×t2 "
where S = 3 m, u = -2.2 m/s (initial speed, elevator is moving up when the screw falls), g = 9.8 m/s2
 
3 = -2.2×t+(1/2)×9.8×t2  
 
solving the above equation we get t = 1.04 s
 
part(b)
formula to be used is "S = (1/2)(g+a)×t2 " , initial speed is zero, because elevator starts from rest when the screw falls.
upward acceleration of elevator is a m/s2
 
3 = (1/2)×(9.8+4)×t2
 
we get  t = 0.66 s from the above equation
