Know all about the Zika Virus

The Zika virus is a viral infection which is transmitted by mosquitoes. It is a flavivirus which is closely related to dengue. Because Zika, dengue and chikungunya viruses are transmitted by mosquitoes, they are mostly active during the day time. The Zika virus usually remains in the blood of an infected person for a week, but in fewer cases, it may persist. Here, we list some important characteristics of the virus which will help you stay informed.

Symptoms:

1. The most common symptoms of Zika are fever, rash, joint pain or conjunctivitis (red eyes). Other symptoms include muscle pain and headache.

2. The illness caused by the virus is usually mild, with symptoms lasting for several days to a week.

Diagnosis:

1. The symptoms of Zika are similar to those of dengue and chikungunya.

2. If you develop any such symptoms, then visit your doctor. You may need to go for specialised blood tests to look for Zika or other similar viruses such as dengue or chikungunya.

Treatment:

1. There is no vaccine or specific medicine available to prevent or to cure Zika infection.

2. Drink plenty of water and take much rest.

3. Do not take anti-inflammatory drugs for temporary relief.

Areas with Zika:

1. Before 2015, the Zika virus outbreak occurred in the areas of Africa, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands.

2. Currently, outbreaks are occurring in various countries. The virus is expected to spread, which will be difficult to determine over time.
