Looking at the extraordinary situation prevailing in the country and the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) was advised to revise the curriculum and reduce the course load for students in Class 9 to Class 12. Consequently, CBSE has reduced the Class 9–12 syllabus by 30% for this academic year. This move was important and has brought a sigh of relief to the students in these classes.
“To aid the decision, a few weeks back I also invited suggestions from all educationists on the reduction of syllabus for students and I am glad to share that we received more than 1.5K suggestions. Thank you, everyone, for the overwhelming response,” tweeted Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank.
Core concepts will be retained. “Considering the importance of learning achievement, it has been decided to rationalise the syllabus up to 30 per cent by retaining the core concepts," Nishank added.
School principals and teachers have been advised by CBSE to ensure that the topics which have been reduced are explained to students to the extent required so students can connect different topics. The reduced syllabus will not be part of the topics for internal assessment and the year-end board examinations.
The final changes which are made in the syllabus have been finalised by the respective Course Committees of the CBSE, with the approval of the Curriculum Committee and Governing Body of the Board.
Inputs have been provided by the National Council of Educational Research and Training on how to teach the curriculum using different strategies due to the disturbances to regular classroom teaching caused by the pandemic.
It is yet unsure when schools will re-open, but schools have already started teaching students online—being the need of the hour. As no school was prepared to face this situation, many guidelines regarding how to teach and the medium to be used for teaching have been shared with schools and teachers.
