CBSE Class 12 Biology 2019 Exam Review and Analysis

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) conducted the AISSCE Biology exam for students of Class 12 today, 15th March 2019, following a short gap of 2 days after the Chemistry paper. So students might not have got sufficient time to revise for the Biology paper. It's important to note that Biology is considered one of the crucial subjects for students who are planning to appear for NEET. Here we decode the CBSE Class 12 Biology paper (Set 2) for 2019.

Let’s first look at the comparison of the chapter-wise distribution of marks of this year’s paper with that of the previous year.

The chapter ‘Human Health and Disease’ was the most-valued chapter carrying 13 marks compared to last year’s most-valued chapter ‘Biotechnology and its Applications’ which carried 10 marks. It was followed by the chapters ‘Principles of Inheritance and Variation’ and ‘Environmental Issues’ with a weightage of 8 marks and 6 marks, respectively. Questions from ‘Reproduction in Organisms’ and ‘Biodiversity and Conservation’ did not find any place in the question paper.

Students with a thorough knowledge of ‘Environmental Issues’ and ‘Human Health and Disease’ would find that answering the questions from both these chapters was relatively easy.

General Observations

We’ve noted some observations from every aspect of the paper with respect to typology, distribution of marks and difficulty level.

  • Distribution of marks corresponding to the 3-mark and 5-mark questions was a bit varied.
  • All the questions were directly from the NCERT textbook and were related to the concept.
  • Application-based and understanding questions were at the finishing line of the competition.
  • Approximately 19 marks went straight into the answer bucket without any thought as four to five questions were remembering based.
  • Choice-based questions were most for ‘Molecular Basis of Inheritance’ (14 marks) and ‘Sexual Reproduction in Flowering Plants’ (11 marks).

Section-wise Analysis

  • Section A was easy as the questions were direct and straightforward.
  • Section B was also relatively easy to moderate with textbook-based remembering questions.
  • As expected, Section C seemed slightly lengthy as most of the questions were of the concept based and remembering type.
  • Section D also had textbook-based questions and this section was also a bit lengthy.

Conclusion

The CBSE Class 12 Biology paper featured questions which were mostly from the CBSE syllabus. With about two to three application-based questions, the difficulty level of different sets was also the same and with easy questions. The CBSE Class 12 Biology paper was quite easy and balanced with many questions from the NCERT textbook. So most students would be able to score above 40 in the 70 marks paper.

Teachers called out some questions as mildly tricky but nothing out of the ordinary or difficult. TopperLearning students who were regular with their learning of concepts and had practised with sample papers would have found the questions pretty straightforward and easy to attempt. It would be fair to conclude that this paper was easy and that it gave students a great scoring opportunity.

It’s now time to focus on Mathematics. Team TopperLearning wishes you all the very best!
