Sugar concentration theory explains the opening and closing of stomata.
  • According to this theory, during the day time, in guard cells, the sugar produced during photosynthesis increases the osmotic pressure which draws in water.
  • Hence, the guard cells become turgid and bulge outwards, widening the stomatal opening.
  • As the stomata open, the diffusion of gases occurs and the requirement of CO2 for photosynthesis is fulfilled.
