Expert Answer:

A hypertonic solution is one where the concentration of solutes is greater outside the cell than inside it. In biological explanation, when a cell is immersed into a hypertonic solution, water flows out of the cell balancing the concentration of solutes. For example- When plant cells are immersed in a hypertonic solution, the cell membrane pulls away from the rigid cell wall but remains joined to the cell wall at points called plasmodesmata.
