Dark and bright fringes identify clearly the regions of interference pattern with waves meet out of phase, low brightness and with waves meet in phase, high brightness respectively.
They are formed because the two interfering waves meet at the point in or out of phase.
Dark fringe means they are out of phase, and bright means in phase.
